Gen Z martial arts fighter reveals the ‘toxic’ problem with modern dating

A young Austrian man has revealed why he’s fed up with “superficial” dating in Australia now.

Zac O’Brien, 23, is a professional martial arts fighter who recently returned from Thailand and has been checking out the Sydney dating scene.

The 23-year-old took to TikTok to tell the story of a blind date where the sparks weren’t exactly flying.

O’Brien said he knew the date wasn’t going well because it was so “awkward,” but things turned around when someone else gave him their number.

It was a real win and a change from how difficult dating can be.

“Dating in general in 2024 is as difficult as finding the right psychologist,” he told news.com.au.

He said dating is “complicated” and social media makes it harder to find a real connection.

“Social media and the way technology is taking over has created this really toxic stigma of dating,” he said.

O’Brien said dating is now “superficial” and trying to find “Gen Z love” isn’t easy.

“I wish I was born in the 90s,” he said.

He explained that he’s tired of dating apps and the mindless nature of swiping and matching.

“I’d rather meet someone more natural,” he admitted.

He explained that dating culture is now so internet-based that getting close to someone in public is seen as taboo.

“It’s disgusting. People think you look depressed,” he said.

“I am a rare case. I have a weird kind of faith that I’m blessed with and I just don’t care.”

“What’s the worst thing they’re going to say? ‘No'”

O’Brien also needs to focus on his health as he suffers from heart problems.

“Yes. I’m going through health problems, but it’s not the birds that break my heart. It’s a legitimate matter of the heart,” he said.

He said it is extremely difficult for him to meet someone he wants to have a relationship with because of the nature of his job.

“It’s a selfish sport. Your whole life revolves around fighting, you are hungry and you are disciplined,” he said.

“It seems crazy to the general population.”

O’Brien said his commitment to fighting has caused problems in past relationships because he is so dedicated to the sport.

However, if the right person came along, O’Brien would be open to a relationship.
