Despite browsing incognito, your history may not be so private after all.
An alleged bug has plagued iPhone users who view NSFW content in a private window, a browsing mode that promises not to save web history or pages visited.
However, some unlucky Apple users have claimed that despite using the privacy feature, their favorite browser seems to remember what was requested — such as pornography — showing their last seen website in the app preview and embarrassing them in front of friends or family.
“When I switch apps (by swiping up), if Chrome is open, it will show I’m on a porn site,” complains an iPhone 11 user in a resurfaced Reddit post, pleading with forum contributors for help.
The anonymous user claimed that they are not on an X-rated site, and when viewing adult content, it is always in Incognito mode and the window then disappears.
However, they say the app still shows NSFW websites as open.
“Already twice, people have looked over my shoulder while I’m telling them something and this happened,” the person continued, adding that “their mother was one of them.”
“Many people have mentioned a similar issue with Safari, but there are no fixes.”
Other users chimed in, claiming to be experiencing the “same problem,” calling it “strange” and speculating whether the issue could be a “virus.”
The Post has contacted Apple for comment.
Despite the original post being shared two years ago, the issue was revisited in the same online thread just a few weeks ago by a user who confirmed that “it’s still a problem.”
“I have a fairly new iPhone and this is happening,” said the anonymous commenter, adding that a previously viewed porn video is “stuck” in Firefox preview mode.
“Nothing I did would save him.”
According to Apple’s online help pages, iPhone users can clear their cache and saved website data by going to their device’s settings, scrolling to Safari’s settings and clicking “Clear History and website data” to delete cookies, browsing history and data from web browsing.
The Reddit user, however, said they tried clearing their cache, restarting the phone and switching web tabs to no avail — the only thing that worked was deleting and reinstalling the browser app.
They questioned why “Apple can’t fix this,” noting that “iOS is clearly saving the image” for app previews.
“It’s a problem that has the potential to lead to very inappropriate things,” the Redditor continued, imploring Apple to fix the problem. “Imagine a child using your phone or showing them something on your phone.”
