They are the new face of buyer’s remorse.
From celebrities to average patients, women who regretted years of filler injections are now sharing the cosmetic changes, but the process can come with unwanted side effects.
“My cheekbones and lips were destroyed and I was left with deep hollows under my eyes,” 49-year-old Lana Hristovski, the moderator of a face filler support group on Facebook, who shared her filler for almost a decade, told the Guardian before. .
“These celebrities make it sound so great that you’re going to look great, but it’s not worth it,” Hristovskin added.
Her sunken features match findings from a recent study that found 18% of participants experienced facial hollowing after using hyaluronidase, the enzyme that breaks down the hyaluronic acid filler.
“Basically, facial collapse can occur after aggressive exfoliation – especially in people who have had large amounts of skin stretching,” said UK-based aesthetic practitioner Dr. Sophie Shotter.
“Unless hyaluronidase is absolutely necessary, we shouldn’t do it.”
Ashley, a 25-year-old from London who declined to give her last name, immediately decided to share the facial filler after receiving it, saying she didn’t recognize herself in the mirror despite looking for “something natural”.
She told The Guardian that the texture of her skin changed after the digestion sessions, leaving her with pins and needles and “excruciating pain” that made her feel “like I’m on fire”.
Experts have criticized the filler industry as the “Wild West”, via the Guardian, claiming the widespread administration of injectors has misled consumers into believing the procedure is risk-free.
The warnings come as celebrity trends for fueling up and using weight loss drugs, which can result in the dreaded ‘Ozempic face’, fuel filler frenzy.
“The market has driven the banalisation of these procedures: ‘Have some filler and if you don’t like it, get it out,'” said Dr Tamara Griffiths, president of the British Association of Dermatologists.
“But it’s not like cutting your hair and letting it grow; these are invasive procedures. Although they are minimally invasive, they are not without risk
